Durham – Gem of the North East
While the North East has no shortage of group friendly hotels, arranging city centre accommodation at a competitive price can often be more difficult. Not so in Durham, Airedale Tours’ Marketing Manager Amani Claughton.
Amani recently visited the Radisson Blu, a good 4 star hotel conveniently located on the River Wear just a short stroll from Durham’s shops, restaurants and nightlife. “The hotel was really easy to find” says Amani, “I was surprised by how close to the town centre the Radisson is, just 10 minutes stroll along the river or 5 minutes using the footbridge and steps”. There is plenty to see and do in Durham and the hotel is in an excellent position to explore the local sights”. Durham Cathedral and Castle are both within walking distance, although those who struggle with hills might wish to call a cab of catch a bus the short distance”. Amani tells us, “the Radisson’s riverside setting also makes it very handy for arranging a pleasure cruise along the River Wear – departures are from Elvet Bridge. Pre-booking is advisable for groups.
“Staff at the hotel were very welcoming and I was impressed with my accommodation. My bedroom was spacious and decorated to a high standard with all the modern facilities you would expect to find”.
Amani opted to dine with friends in the city centre, which has a wide range of restaurants covering a variety of cuisine. “Although I’d arranged to eat out that evening, the hotel restaurant looked light and airy and the menu was very appealing with something to suit everyone” says Amani.
Breakfast the next day at the hotel didn’t disappoint. The hotel offers a choice of continental or full English breakfast form a self service buffet where guests could also serve their own brewed tea or coffee. “Breakfast was of a high standard with lots of choice” says Amani “the continental breakfast featured a wide range of cooked meats, cheeses and breads plus fresh fruit, cereals and fruit juices. The full English was also very good with all the usual ingredients along with local favourite such as Black Pudding”.
While Durham itself makes a good day out there are many more great excursion options outside of the city and all easily reached by coach. Beamish, Newcastle and Alnwick are all possible excursion destinations.
Amani comments “My stay at the Radisson Blu was very comfortable indeed and I will definitely be returning”.
